Freedom from Sickness and Disease

Freedom from Sickness and Disease

By the stripes of Jesus, we have freedom from sickness and disease. Sickness and disease are some of the greatest enemies of humanity. They rob people of peace, weaken productivity, bring emotional pain, and sometimes even cut lives short. But for the believer in Christ, the Word of God gives assurance that we can experience freedom, healing, and wholeness.

God’s Original Design: A Life of Wholeness

In the beginning, when God created man, He did not design humanity to live in sickness. Genesis 1:31 (NIV) says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Adam and Eve enjoyed perfect health in Eden until sin entered the world. Sickness is therefore a product of the fall, not God’s original plan.

Jesus as Our Healer

One of the key missions of Jesus was to destroy the works of the devil, including sickness. Acts 10:38 (NIV) says, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.”

Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus healing:

  • The blind received sight (Mark 10:46–52).
  • The lame walked (John 5:1–9).
  • Lepers were cleansed (Luke 17:12–14).
  • The demon-possessed were set free (Mark 5:1–20).
  • Even the dead were raised (John 11:43–44).

This proves that healing is not only God’s ability but also His will.

Healing in the Atonement

The death and resurrection of Jesus secured not just our forgiveness of sins, but also our healing. Isaiah 53:5 (KJV) says, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

The Apostle Peter affirms this in 1 Peter 2:24 (NIV): “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed.”

This means healing is part of our covenant rights as believers.

God’s Promises of Healing

  • Exodus 15:26 (NIV): “I am the Lord, who heals you.”
  • Psalm 103:2–3 (NIV): “Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases.”
  • Jeremiah 30:17 (NIV): “But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds,” declares the Lord.

These promises assure us that God’s power is available to bring total healing.

Practical Steps to Walk in Divine Health

  1. Faith in God’s Word – Believe His promises concerning healing (Romans 10:17).
  2. Prayer of Faith – James 5:14–15 instructs believers to pray and anoint the sick with oil in faith.
  3. Right Confession – Speak life, not death (Proverbs 18:21).
  4. Obedience and Healthy Living – Avoid sin and cultivate habits that glorify God in your body (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
  5. Resist the Enemy – Sometimes sickness is spiritual oppression; we must stand in authority (James 4:7).

Testimonies Build Faith

The Bible is filled with testimonies of healing, and even today, countless believers testify of miraculous healing—cancers healed, blind eyes opened, chronic pain removed. These serve as evidence that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

The Greatest Healing: Eternal Life

While physical healing is vital, the greatest healing is salvation—healing from sin that leads to eternal death. Even when we pray for healing, we must remember that eternal life in Christ is God’s ultimate gift.

Conclusion

Freedom from sickness and disease is part of God’s redemptive package for His children. Jesus not only bore our sins but also our sicknesses. As believers, we are called to stand in faith, declare God’s Word, and experience His healing power in our lives.

Psalm 118:17 (NIV) declares, “I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.” That is the testimony of every child of God who walks in the freedom Christ has provided.
