Today, we are going to consider the topic, ‘Quenching The Holy Spirit.”
What does it mean to quench the Holy Spirit?
- To quench the Holy Spirit means to put out the fire of the Holy Spirit or to turn away God’s Spirit
- Quenching the Holy Spirit also means to subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
- To quench the Holy Spirit means to stifle or to extinguish the Spirit of God
Introduction – Don’t quench or extinguish the Holy Spirit
From the account of Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5, we realized that God has granted to Christians the ability either to restrict or release what the Spirit does in our lives.
The Holy Spirit comes like a fire:
The Spirit comes to us as a fire. You can fan the fire of the Holy Spirit into full flame and give Him the freedom to accomplish His will. You can also douse and extinguish the Holy Spirit by the water of human fear, control, and flawed theology.
The Spirit obviously desires to work in your life and in our church. To use Paul’s metaphor or analogy, the Spirit is like a fire whose flame we want to be careful not to quench or extinguish.
Acts 2:3
They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
