Praying for the Infilling of the Holy Spirit

Praying for the Infilling of the Holy Spirit: Lessons from the Disciples’ Waiting and the Power of Perseverance

The infilling of the Holy Spirit is one of the most profound experiences in a believer’s life. It is the empowerment that enables us to walk in divine authority, fulfill our God-given purpose, and live a victorious Christian life. However, this infilling is not always instant—it requires earnest seeking, patient waiting, and unwavering faith.

The Disciples’ Waiting for the Holy Spirit

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He commanded His disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the Promise of the Father—the baptism of the Holy Spirit:

“And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” — Luke 24:49 (KJV)

For ten days, the disciples waited in the Upper Room, praying with one accord (Acts 1:14). They did not grow weary or discouraged. Even though they had no specific timeline, they held on to Jesus’ words, believing that the promise would come. On the Day of Pentecost, their waiting was rewarded:

“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting… And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” — Acts 2:2-4 (KJV)

This teaches us an essential lesson: the infilling of the Holy Spirit requires persistence in prayer and unwavering faith in God’s promises.

Don’t Take “No” for an Answer

Many times, when believers seek the Holy Spirit’s power, they become discouraged if they do not receive it immediately. They pray once, twice, maybe a few times, and if nothing happens, they assume it is not for them. But Jesus teaches us to be persistent:

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” — Matthew 7:7 (KJV)

In the original Greek, the words ask, seek, and knock imply continuous action: “Keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking.” This means we should never stop pressing in through prayer. The disciples could have left the Upper Room after a few days of waiting, but they remained steadfast—and their persistence paid off.

Keys to Receiving the Infilling of the Holy Spirit

If you desire the Holy Spirit’s fullness in your life, here are some key principles to follow:

  1. Desire and Hunger for MoreBlessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled (Matthew 5:6).
  2. Wait with Expectation – Just like the disciples, stay in the place of prayer, trusting that God will fulfill His promise.
  3. Pray Fervently and PersistentlyThe effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much (James 5:16).
  4. Obey God’s Instructions – The Holy Spirit is given to those who are willing to obey God (Acts 5:32).
  5. Do Not Settle for Less – Refuse to accept “No” for an answer. Keep pressing until you receive!

Conclusion

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a gift that God desires to give to every believer. Just like the disciples, we must wait patiently, pray fervently, and persistently seek His power. The key is to never give up—don’t take “No” for an answer. If you continue to hunger, seek, and knock, the Holy Spirit will fill you in due time
