Prayer to Overcome Fear
Prayer to Overcome Fear: Moving Forward in Faith
Today we will be considering the prayer to overcome fear. Fear is one of the most paralyzing forces in life. It has the potential to keep us stuck in cycles of delay, doubt, and defeat. Whether it’s fear of failure, fear of rejection, fear of the unknown, or fear of stepping outside your comfort zone, the effects are the same—it hinders progress and keeps you from moving forward into God’s purpose for your life.
But fear is not from God. The Bible says in 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV):
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
This means fear is not your inheritance. Faith is. And through prayer, you can overcome fear and step confidently into the destiny God has for you.
Fear: A Major Hindrance to Movement
In the journey of life, fear often surfaces when we are on the brink of something great. Like the Israelites standing before the Red Sea with Pharaoh behind them, fear can tempt us to go backward. But God’s response in Exodus 14:15 (NIV) was clear:
“Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.’”
God’s instruction was simple: move forward—even when it doesn’t make sense. This is where faith begins, and fear ends.
When Fear Met Faith: A Biblical Example
Let’s consider Peter walking on water in Matthew 14:29–30 (NIV):
“Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”
Peter began in faith, but fear caused him to sink. Still, his cry for help was a prayer, and Jesus immediately caught him. That’s the power of prayer—it turns sinking into saving. It turns fear into forward movement.
How Prayer Helps You Overcome Fear
1. Prayer Refocuses Your Mind on God
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” – Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)
Fear thrives when your focus is on the problem. Prayer shifts your focus to the Problem Solver—God Himself.
2. Prayer Reaffirms God’s Promises
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you.” – Isaiah 41:10 (NKJV)
In prayer, you rehearse God’s promises, and they become your personal battle cry against fear.
3. Prayer Replaces Worry with Peace
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6–7 (NIV)
You can’t be filled with fear and God’s peace at the same time. Prayer invites peace and evicts fear.
A Simple Prayer to Overcome Fear and Move Forward
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your presence in my life. I confess that fear has tried to hold me back from the things You’ve called me to do. But today, I choose to trust You. I surrender every fear—fear of failure, fear of man, fear of the unknown—and I receive Your peace in its place. Fill me with boldness, courage, and clarity. Help me to move forward, not in my own strength, but in Your grace. I believe that You go before me and that You are with me. Thank You for delivering me from fear and empowering me to walk by faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Moving Forward in Confidence
You weren’t created to live in fear. You were made to walk by faith. Each time you pray, you’re choosing to silence fear and step into the promises of God. So when fear tries to whisper lies, let your prayer shout the truth:
“The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1, NIV)
Let your journey of moving forward begin today—not in fear, but in faith.

Breaking Free from Fear through Prayer

When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.’”
7. Lord, because You are my light and salvation, I will not be afraid of any man or situation. Be my stronghold always, in Jesus’ name.

9. Lord, thank You for adopting me as Your child. I renounce every spirit of slavery to fear. I cry, “Abba, Father!” with boldness and confidence.

10. Father, when fear arises in me, help me to immediately place my trust in You. I will not be afraid of what man can do to me, in Jesus’ name.
Psalm 56:3–4 (NIV)
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Empowered by Faith: A Prayer Against Fear

12. Father, help me to stand firm in faith and not be moved by fear. Fight for me, Lord, and let me witness Your salvation, in Jesus’ name.
Exodus 14:13–14 (NKJV)
