Spiritual Authority In Christ: Overcoming Evil

Spiritual Authority In Christ: Overcoming Every Power Resisting God’s Righteous Purpose

Today, we will be praying about spiritual authority in Christ. God has called His people to live in obedience to Him, resist evil, and fulfil the purposes for which He has called them. Yet the Christian journey includes spiritual opposition, temptation, discouragement, deception, and circumstances that test our faith and commitment to God.

The Bible teaches that spiritual authority in Christ is exercised through dependence on God, submission to His will, faith in His Word, and resistance to the devil. It is not an independent power that believers possess apart from God. It is authority received from Christ and exercised in alignment with His purposes.

James 4:7 establishes the proper order: believers must submit to God and resist the devil. This means that spiritual victory begins not with human strength, loud declarations, or confidence in personal ability, but with a surrendered heart and a life governed by God’s truth.

Jeremiah 51:20–23 provides a striking picture of a weapon used in battle. Although the immediate historical context concerns Babylon as an instrument in God’s judgment, the imagery offers a devotional reminder of an important truth: an instrument is useful only when it is placed in the hands of someone who can use it.

As Christians, we should therefore ask two important questions: Am I resisting what opposes God’s will, and am I fully surrendered for God’s use?

What Is Spiritual Authority in Christ?

Spiritual authority in Christ is the authority believers receive through their relationship with Jesus and exercise under His lordship. It involves standing against evil, rejecting temptation, proclaiming God’s truth, obeying Scripture, praying in faith, and serving according to God’s will.

In Luke 10:19, Jesus speaks to His disciples about the authority He has given them over the power of the enemy. The wider passage describes their ministry and their return with joy because spiritual powers had been subject to them in His name. Jesus then directs their attention beyond the experience of power to the greater joy of belonging to God (Luke 10:17–20).

This passage reminds believers that spiritual authority is a gift entrusted by Christ, not a reason for pride or self-exaltation.

The source of spiritual authority

Christian authority does not originate in human status, personality, religious titles, or personal strength. It is rooted in Christ and exercised in submission to Him.

Three principles follow:

  • Christ is the source: Believers depend on His authority rather than their own power.
  • God’s Word provides direction: Spiritual actions must be consistent with biblical truth.
  • Obedience demonstrates submission: We cannot claim to represent God’s purposes while deliberately rejecting His instructions.

The goal is not to become powerful for personal advantage. It is to remain faithful to Christ and participate in His work.

Satan’s Opposition to God’s Purpose: Lessons from Scripture

The Bible presents Satan as an adversary who tempts, deceives, accuses, and seeks to draw people away from obedience to God. Scripture gives several examples of how this opposition appears and how believers should respond.

A. The Garden of Eden: The danger of deception and disobedience

Scripture: Genesis 3:1–19

In the Garden of Eden, the serpent questioned God’s command, challenged the consequences of disobedience, and presented an alternative to trusting God. Eve and Adam ate the forbidden fruit, and their disobedience brought shame, alienation, and consequences into human life.

The passage teaches that temptation often begins by distorting what God has said. The serpent encouraged the humans to question God’s goodness and trust their own judgment over His command.

The lesson is not simply that Adam and Eve failed to resist an enemy. It is that they accepted deception and acted contrary to God’s instruction.

Practical lessons:

  1. Know what God’s Word says rather than relying on incomplete impressions.
  2. Test persuasive ideas against Scripture.
  3. Recognize that temptation may appeal to legitimate desires in illegitimate ways.
  4. Choose obedience even when disobedience appears attractive.

Spiritual resistance begins when we refuse to accept deception as truth.

B. Jesus in the wilderness: Resisting temptation through God’s Word

Scripture: Matthew 4:1–11

After Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights, the devil tempted Him in the wilderness. The temptations challenged His relationship with the Father, His trust in God’s provision, and His commitment to worship God alone.

Jesus answered by drawing upon Scripture. He refused to use His divine identity for selfish gratification, rejected the misuse of God’s promises, and refused to worship anyone other than God. The devil departed, and angels came and ministered to Jesus.

Jesus’ example teaches that resisting temptation requires more than recognizing evil. It requires knowing God’s Word, understanding its meaning, and obeying it under pressure.

How to apply this lesson:

  • When tempted to compromise your integrity, choose truth.
  • When discouraged by unmet needs, continue to trust God while acting responsibly.
  • When tempted to manipulate circumstances, refuse to test God.
  • When success or influence invites compromise, remain loyal to God.

Jesus did not overcome temptation by surrendering to the devil’s terms. He remained faithful to the Father.

C. Peter’s objection to the cross: Good intentions can oppose God’s purpose

Scripture: Matthew 16:21–23

Jesus told His disciples that He would suffer, be killed, and be raised on the third day. Peter objected strongly, insisting that such suffering should not happen to Jesus.

Peter’s response may have reflected genuine concern for his Master. Nevertheless, his objection stood in opposition to Jesus’ declared mission. Jesus rebuked the influence behind Peter’s words because they reflected a human perspective rather than God’s plan.

This passage offers an important lesson in spiritual discernment: not every suggestion that sounds loving, reasonable, or protective is consistent with God’s purpose.

Rather than treating Peter himself as an adversary, Jesus distinguished between the person and the proposal, recognizing that Peter’s suggestion directly opposed His core mission.

Believers should therefore examine counsel, opportunities, fears, and personal preferences in the light of Scripture. At the same time, they should remain humble, because no individual is beyond the need for correction.

D. The continuing battle: The thief’s destructive intent

Scripture: John 10:10

Jesus contrasts the thief’s destructive purpose with His own mission to give abundant life. The immediate passage concerns the imagery of the shepherd, the sheep, and those who fail to care for them properly.

The verse is frequently applied to the destructive work associated with the devil. In using it devotionally, Christians should preserve the passage’s wider shepherd imagery and recognize that Jesus presents Himself as the One who gives life.

The Christian response to evil is therefore not merely defensive. Believers are also called to pursue the life Christ gives through faith, obedience, love, truth, service, and fellowship with God.

The Battle-Axe and Weapon of War

Jeremiah 51:20–23 uses the imagery of a war club or weapon to describe an instrument employed in the judgment of nations. The immediate context is a prophecy concerning Babylon and its eventual judgment. The NET Bible notes identify Babylon as the commonly understood referent of the weapon imagery, while acknowledging a textual interpretive question about the identity of the figure addressed.

Read the passage in context: Jeremiah 51:20–23 (NET).

A. An instrument cannot fulfil its purpose independently

Consider an axe. It may be sharp, well made, and fit for its intended task, but it does not decide where to go or what to cut. Someone must take it up and use it.

In a similar devotional illustration, believers are called to place their lives at God’s disposal. Our gifts, time, knowledge, resources, opportunities, and spiritual abilities can become instruments for His work when we use them in obedience to Him.

Romans 6:13 encourages believers to present themselves to God as instruments of righteousness. Second Timothy 2:21 also describes the value of being cleansed and prepared for useful service.

The emphasis is not on self-importance but on availability.

B. God’s instrument must be yielded to God

A tool is useful when it is available and fit for its purpose. Likewise, believers should cultivate hearts that are willing to hear God, obey His Word, and respond faithfully to His direction.

Practical surrender includes:

  • Giving God priority in our decisions.
  • Turning away from known sin.
  • Developing spiritual maturity through Scripture and prayer.
  • Using our abilities to serve others.
  • Remaining teachable when corrected.
  • Refusing to use spiritual language to justify personal ambition or harm.

God’s purpose is not served merely because someone has enthusiasm or a strong public profile. Faithfulness, character, discernment, and obedience matter.

C. Being available is different from being self-directed

An axe does not dictate the task to the person using it. Similarly, believers should not assume that every personal ambition, desire, or plan automatically represents God’s will.

Surrender means asking God to direct our lives and being willing to adjust our plans according to His Word and wisdom.

The prayer of a surrendered believer is not simply, “Lord, bless everything I have decided to do.” It is also, “Lord, teach me what is right, correct what is wrong, and help me obey You.”

The devotional lesson of the battle-axe is this: become an instrument God can use, rather than insisting that God must use you according to your own agenda.

How Christians Can Exercise Spiritual Authority Biblically

The Bible does not present spiritual authority as a formula for controlling every event or guaranteeing a trouble-free life. It calls believers to depend on God, resist evil, and remain faithful even when difficulties continue.

Step 1: Submit yourself to God

Scripture: James 4:7–10

James places submission before resistance. He also calls readers to draw near to God, cleanse their hands, purify their hearts, and humble themselves before the Lord.

This means that spiritual warfare begins with personal surrender. A believer who wants to resist evil should also be willing to examine personal attitudes, motives, habits, and conduct.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I obeying what God has already revealed in Scripture?
  • Is there an area of my life where I am resisting correction?
  • Am I seeking God’s will or merely asking Him to endorse my own?
  • Do my actions reflect the character of Christ?

Submission to God is not weakness. It is the foundation of faithful spiritual resistance.

Step 2: Stand firmly on the Word of God

Scripture: Matthew 4:1–11; Ephesians 6:17

Jesus used Scripture to answer temptation. Paul describes the Word of God as the sword of the Spirit in his teaching about the armour of God.

Believers should therefore study Scripture in context, understand its teaching, and apply it faithfully.

This involves more than repeating a verse. It requires understanding what the passage means, what it reveals about God, and how it directs our conduct.

For example, when fear encourages dishonesty, Scripture calls us to truthfulness. When bitterness tempts us to retaliate, Scripture teaches forgiveness and entrustment of judgment to God. When pride encourages self-exaltation, Scripture calls us to humility.

God’s Word equips us to recognize and reject what conflicts with His truth.

Step 3: Put on the whole armour of God

Scripture: Ephesians 6:10–18

Paul describes the armour of God as the means by which believers stand against spiritual opposition.

Armour Practical application
Belt of truth Reject deception and practise honesty.
Breastplate of righteousness Pursue integrity and obedience.
Gospel of peace Live as a person who promotes reconciliation and peace.
Shield of faith Trust God when fear and doubt arise.
Helmet of salvation Remember your identity and hope in Christ.
Sword of the Spirit Use Scripture faithfully to discern and answer temptation.
Prayer and supplication Depend on God and intercede for others.

Rather than serving as an absolute shield against trials, this armor illustrates a life anchored in divine strength and formed by truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, Scripture, and prayer.”

Step 4: Resist the devil without treating people as enemies

Scripture: James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8–9; Ephesians 6:12

Peter warns believers to remain watchful and steadfast in faith. Paul teaches that the Christian struggle is not against flesh and blood.

This distinction is essential. Spiritual warfare must not become a justification for hatred, abuse, accusations against others, or attempts to control people.

A person who disagrees with us is not automatically acting as an agent of Satan. A difficult colleague, family member, church member, or leader must still be treated with dignity, fairness, and appropriate boundaries.

Biblical resistance can include:

  • Refusing to participate in wrongdoing.
  • Rejecting lies and manipulation.
  • Maintaining moral and spiritual integrity.
  • Praying for people who oppose us.
  • Seeking wise counsel when facing harmful behaviour.
  • Reporting abuse or wrongdoing through appropriate channels when necessary.

Forgiveness does not require remaining in danger or concealing wrongdoing. Believers can oppose evil while seeking truth, justice, safety, and reconciliation where possible.

Step 5: Pray with faith, wisdom, and perseverance

Scripture: Ephesians 6:18; Philippians 4:6–7

Prayer expresses dependence on God. Through prayer, believers worship, confess, give thanks, intercede, seek wisdom, and ask for strength to remain faithful.

Prayer is not a way to manipulate God or guarantee that every desired outcome will happen immediately. It is part of a continuing relationship with Him.

Practical prayer priorities include:

  1. Asking God for wisdom and discernment.
  2. Confessing sin and seeking His help to change.
  3. Praying for strength to resist temptation.
  4. Interceding for family, church, community, and leaders.
  5. Asking for courage to obey God in difficult circumstances.
  6. Giving thanks for God’s faithfulness and grace.

Persevering prayer keeps our attention on God rather than allowing fear or opposition to define our lives.

Step 6: Remain faithful when opposition continues

Scripture: Ephesians 6:13; 1 Peter 5:9

The Bible does not promise that every challenge will disappear as soon as a believer prays or resists temptation. Sometimes faithfulness involves continuing to stand, seeking help, making wise decisions, and enduring hardship.

Jesus Himself faced suffering while remaining obedient to the Father. The early Christians also encountered persecution and difficulty.

Spiritual authority is therefore not measured solely by how quickly circumstances change. It is also seen in a believer’s perseverance, integrity, love, and faithfulness under pressure.

Step 7: Become useful for God’s righteous purposes

Scripture: Romans 6:13; 2 Timothy 2:20–21

The Christian life is not only about resisting what is evil. It is also about doing what is good.

God’s people can serve His purposes by teaching the truth, caring for the vulnerable, supporting those in need, strengthening families, sharing the gospel, encouraging the discouraged, and acting with justice and compassion.

The gifts God has entrusted to you may be used in ministry, education, business, leadership, creativity, hospitality, or practical service. Whatever the setting, the call is to act with faithfulness and integrity.

Do not focus exclusively on the opposition you face. Also consider the good work God has placed before you.

What Can Prevent a Believer from Fulfilling God’s Purpose?

Several attitudes and behaviours can weaken a believer’s faithfulness. Recognizing them helps us respond with humility rather than blame.

Deception

Deception distorts truth and can lead people away from obedience. Believers should test teachings and impressions against Scripture, read passages in context, and seek mature counsel.

Disobedience

Knowing what is right but repeatedly refusing to do it can undermine spiritual maturity. Repentance includes acknowledging wrongdoing and turning toward obedience.

Pride and self-reliance

Spiritual gifts, knowledge, or success can tempt people to rely on themselves. Scripture calls believers to humility and dependence on God.

Fear and discouragement

Fear can make obedience difficult, especially when the outcome is uncertain. Believers can acknowledge fear honestly while seeking God’s strength, support, and wisdom.

Division and unforgiveness

Unresolved conflict can damage relationships and weaken a community’s witness. Christians should pursue truthful conversations, accountability, forgiveness, and reconciliation where appropriate.

Neglect of spiritual disciplines

A life without regular engagement with Scripture, prayer, Christian fellowship, and reflection can become more vulnerable to confusion and discouragement. These practices help believers remain grounded and attentive to God.

Not every difficulty is caused by a particular spiritual attack. Illness, loss, injustice, practical barriers, and ordinary human limitations also require compassion, discernment, and sometimes professional assistance. Biblical faith encourages believers to seek God while responding responsibly to the realities they face.

How to Know Whether You Are Available for God’s Use

A useful spiritual self-examination is to consider whether your life reflects the character and priorities of Christ.

Ask yourself:

  • Surrender: Am I willing to obey God when His Word challenges my preferences?
  • Character: Am I cultivating honesty, humility, patience, and self-control?
  • Discernment: Do I examine my beliefs and decisions in the light of Scripture?
  • Service: Am I using my gifts to help others and contribute to God’s work?
  • Perseverance: Do I continue in faith when circumstances are difficult?
  • Love: Do I treat people with dignity, including those who disagree with me?
  • Accountability: Am I willing to receive corrections from mature and trustworthy believers?

These questions are not a test of personal perfection. They are an invitation to grow in spiritual maturity.

God’s people are not called to boast in their own strength. They are called to depend on Him and to become increasingly faithful in the work He entrusts to them.

A Prayer for Spiritual Authority and Surrender to God

Heavenly Father, thank You for the victory and grace available to me through Jesus Christ. Teach me to submit myself fully to You and to resist every temptation, deception, and influence that draws me away from Your truth.

Strengthen me through Your Word and help me put on the whole armour You have provided. Give me wisdom to recognize what is wrong, courage to do what is right, and humility to receive correction when I need it.

Lord, make my life useful for Your righteous purposes. Cleanse my motives, refine my character, and help me use my gifts to serve others, advance Your truth, and demonstrate the love of Christ. When I encounter opposition, keep me from hatred, pride, fear, and discouragement. Teach me to stand firm in faith while walking in love, wisdom, and integrity.

I surrender my plans, abilities, resources, and future to You. Direct my steps and help me remain faithful to the work You have entrusted to me. May my life bring honour to Your name and become a useful instrument in Your hands.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Conclusion: Become an Instrument God Can Use

The message of spiritual authority is not a call to self-exaltation or a promise that believers will never experience hardship. It is a call to live under Christ’s lordship, resist evil, remain grounded in Scripture, and fulfil God’s purposes with faithfulness.

Jeremiah 51:20–23 provides the image of a weapon used as an instrument in a larger purpose. In its original context, that imagery concerns Babylon and divine judgment. As a devotional illustration for Christians today, it invites us to reflect on whether we have made ourselves available for God’s service.

The New Testament clarifies how believers should respond: submit to God, resist the devil, put on the whole armour of God, pray continually, and remain steadfast in faith.

Do not merely ask God to remove every obstacle. Ask Him to strengthen your character, direct your decisions, and show you how to remain faithful amid the obstacles you encounter.

Your responsibility is to surrender, obey, resist evil, and serve faithfully. God remains the source of your strength and the One to whom your life belongs.

“You are My battle-ax and weapons of war: For with you I will break the nation in pieces; With you I will destroy kingdoms; 21 With you I will break in pieces the horse and its rider; With you I will break in pieces the chariot and its rider; 22 With you also I will break in pieces man and woman; With you I will break in pieces old and young; With you I will break in pieces the young man and the maiden; 23 With you also I will break in pieces the shepherd and his flock; With you I will break in pieces the farmer and his yoke of oxen; And with you I will break in pieces governors and rulers.

  1. Father, help me submit completely to Your authority and resist every temptation, deception, and influence that seeks to draw me away from Your will, in Jesus’ name.

James 4:7 (NKJV)

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

  1. Lord Jesus, help me exercise the authority You have entrusted to me with faith, humility, and obedience. Empower me to overcome spiritual opposition and fulfil Your assignment for my life.

Luke 10:19 (NKJV)

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.

Spiritual Dominion in Christ: Defeating Every Force Opposing God’s Will

  1. Father, strengthen me in the power of Your might. Clothe me with the whole armour of God and help me stand firm against every spiritual attack, deception, and temptation.

Ephesians 6:10–18 (NKJV)

Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; 18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints

  1. Father, by Your power, demolish every false belief, ungodly argument, and thought pattern that opposes Your truth in my life. Help me bring my thoughts into obedience to Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:3–5 (NKJV)

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ

  1. Father, give me discernment to recognize temptation and deception. Strengthen me to stand upon Your Word and remain obedient to You when my faith is tested.

Matthew 4:1–4 (NKJV)

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” 4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

The Believer’s Authority: Overcoming Resistance to God’s Purpose

  1. Father, deliver me from every mindset, counsel, fear, or personal preference that would lead me away from Your revealed will. Give me discernment to recognize what aligns with Your purpose.

Matthew 16:21–23 (NKJV)

From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!” 23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

  1. Father, strengthen my faith when I encounter opposition and adversity. Help me remain confident in Your love and faithful to Your purpose, knowing that hardship cannot separate me from Christ.

Romans 8:31–39 (NKJV)

“What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.”

37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

  1. Father, strengthen my confidence in Your presence and power. Help me overcome deception, false teaching, and every influence that challenges the truth of Your Word.

Revelation 12:10–11 (NKJV)

“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”

  1. Father, defend me against false accusations, unjust opposition, and every plan intended to undermine the work You have entrusted to me. Establish Your truth and righteousness in my life.

Exercising Authority in Christ: Defeating Opposition to God’s Righteous Will

  1. Father, let Your Holy Spirit empower me to accomplish the work You have given me. Remove my dependence on human strength alone and teach me to rely on Your wisdom and power.

Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV)

“So he answered and said to me: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ Says the Lord of hosts.”

  1. Father, let sin no longer dominate my thoughts, words, decisions, or actions. I surrender my body, mind, talents, and resources to You as instruments of righteousness for Your glory.

Romans 6:12–14 (NKJV)

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. 13 And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”

  1. Father, make me spiritually alert and steadfast in faith. Help me resist the devil without fear, persevere through trials, and trust You to establish, strengthen, and settle me according to Your will.

1 Peter 5:8–10 (NKJV)

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.”

Closing Declaration:

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, strengthen me to stand firm in Your truth, resist evil, overcome temptation, and fulfil Your righteous purpose. Make my life a vessel of honour and an instrument for Your glory. May my thoughts, words, decisions, gifts, and actions remain submitted to Your authority. Amen.
