Give Thanks To The Covenant Keeping God
Give Thanks To The Covenant Keeping God
Today, we will give thanks to the covenant keeping God. What is a covenant? A covenant is a formal, binding agreement or promise between two or more parties. In a biblical context, a covenant is a sacred agreement or contract between God and humans. Covenants in the Bible are significant because they establish the terms of a relationship, often involving promises, stipulations, and signs that confirm the agreement.
Noahic Covenant
The first covenant made in the Bible is known as the Noahic Covenant. This covenant was established between God and Noah after the flood, as recorded in Genesis 9:8-17. In this covenant, God promised never to destroy all life on earth with a flood again. The sign of this covenant was the rainbow, which God set in the sky as a reminder of His promise.
This covenant is significant because it represents God’s commitment to preserving life on earth and marks the beginning of a series of covenants that God would establish with humanity throughout the Bible.
This covenant is unconditional, meaning that it does not depend on any actions from Noah or his descendants; it is solely based on God’s promise. Based on this covenant, God has preserved the earth and He has never destroyed the earth with water again. The sins of the world are very rampant. Maybe we have even done worse things than the time of Noah. However, because our God is a covenant keeping God, He has kept His Word. This shows that He will also keep all His covenants over your life.
Abrahamic Covenant
The second covenant in the Bible is known as the Abrahamic Covenant. This covenant was established between God and Abraham, and it is first introduced in Genesis 12:1-3 and further elaborated in Genesis 15 and Genesis 17.
In the Abrahamic Covenant, God made several key promises to Abraham:
- Land: God promised Abraham that his descendants would inherit the land of Canaan (Genesis 12:1, Genesis 15:18-21).
- Descendants: God promised that Abraham would have many descendants, as numerous as the stars in the sky (Genesis 15:5, Genesis 17:4-5).
- Blessing: God promised that Abraham and his descendants would be a blessing to all the nations of the earth (Genesis 12:3).
- Sign of the Covenant: The sign of the covenant was circumcision, which Abraham and his descendants were to keep as a perpetual sign of their relationship with God (Genesis 17:10-14).
This covenant is foundational to the relationship between God and the people of Israel, as Abraham is considered the father of the Jewish nation. The Abrahamic Covenant is significant not only for its promises of land and descendants but also for the spiritual blessings that extend to all nations through Abraham’s seed, a theme later echoed in the New Testament with the coming of Jesus Christ.
As we pray today, we will express our gratitude to the covenant keeping God.
