Pray That God Will Give You A New Name
Pray That God Will Give You A New Name
Today, we will be praying that God will give us a new name. God attaches so much importance to names. He changed the names of many people in the scriptures. God changed the name of Abram to Abraham before he could have Isaac. He changed the name of Jacob to Israel so that he can fulfil his destiny. He also changed the name of Saul to Paul. One of the things that God promised us when we get to heaven is a new name. Revelation 2:17 says, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.”
God Will Give Us A New Name In Heaven
There are many names that people bear today which they cannot pronounce in heaven. These set of people may be believers, yet, they named them after some gods or deity. I know from the scriptures that no unclean thing will enter heaven. So, I have been wondering how they will pronounce these names in heaven. However, when I read the book of Revelation 2:17, and I realize that God will give us a new name in heaven, that settles it. Such people will have a change of name in heaven if they eventually make it there.
However, you don’t need to wait until you get to heaven before you can receive a new name from God. Jesus changed the name of Simon to Cephas (Aramaic) or Peter(Greek) which means “The Rock or Stone.” Jesus addressed the instability in the life of Peter by that name. Jesus had foreseen that Peter will not be stable if He did not change his name. So, He changed his name from Simon Bar-Jona to Peter. Isaiah 62:2 says, “The nations will see your righteousness, and all kings your glory; And you will be called by a new name which the mouth of the Lord will designate.” I pray that the Lord will give you a new name in Jesus’ name.
Don’t Give Your Child a Wrong Name
Many parents made the mistake of giving their children a bad name. The mother of Jabez gave him that name because she gave birth to him in sorrow. So Jabez means “Sorrowful or born in pain.” It is not scriptural to give your child a bad name. God did not give Jacob his name. His parents gave him the name because his hand took hold on Esau’s heel. Genesis 25:23 says, “And the Lord said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manners of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.”
Rebecca should have called Jacob “Stronger” or “Greater” because that was what God called him. However, she gave him the name “Jacob” and that name tampered with his destiny for a long time before God changed it. I pray that God will give you a new name in Jesus’ name.
Situation or Circumstances Should Not Determine A Child’s Name
Don’t allow bad situations or circumstances that you are going through to influence the name you will give to your child. When it comes to giving a child a wrong name, Phinehas’ wife comes to mind. She was pregnant when she lost her husband and her brother-in-law, Hophni. She also lost her father-in-law, Eli, and the Philistines took the ark of God away. When she had the news she went into forced labour.
In the process, she gave birth to a son and named him Ichabod, meaning “Without honour.” She said that the glory has departed from Israel. You can imagine the kind of the name she gave a child who had contributed nothing to the evil that happened in Israel and in the house of Eli. If your parents have given you a bad name, I pray that God will give you a new name in Jesus’ name.
God Named Jesus In Line With His Divine Purpose
I believe that God did not want the earthly parents of Jesus to make that same mistake of giving Him a wrong name. Prior to His birth, God had already given Him the proper names that reflect His destiny. Isaiah 9:6 says, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Jesus’ name reflected His purpose and destiny. This shows us the proper way to name our children. You should name them according to God’s purpose for their lives. You need to inquire from God for a proper name for your child. Peradventure your parents have given you a wrong name, I pray that God will give you a new name in Jesus’ name.
When the angel of God also appeared to Mary, he told her that Jesus’ name should be Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.” God knows that His name must carry His destiny. May the Lord give us the revelation of the power of a name in Jesus’ name.

Special Bible Passage
1 Samuel 4:19-21
And his daughter in law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. 20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it. 21 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
