Hallowing God’s Name

Today, we are going to be hallowing God’s name. In the sequence of the Lord’s prayer, after acknowledging God as your father, the next step is to glorify or hallow His name. What is the meaning of hallow? It means to bless, to beautify or glorify.

What time are we supposed to hallow God’s name?

  • We should hallow God’s name to show our appreciation after He has answered our prayers

Hannah worshiped God after receiving answers to her prayer. Hannah was barren for a very long time. She prayed to God for a son and promised to give him back to God if God should answer her prayer. God answered her by giving her a son and she fulfilled her promise by giving the son back to God. She also prayed this prayer of thanksgiving to God:

I Samuel 2:1-3

Then Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the Lord! The Lord has made me strong. Now I have an answer for my enemies. I rejoice because you rescued me. 2 No one is holy like the Lord! There is no one besides you; There is no Rock like our God. 3 “Stop acting so proud and haughty! Don’t speak with such arrogance! For the Lord is a God who knows what you have done; he will judge your actions.

  • We should hallow God’s name after He has given us a great breakthrough

Moses and Miriam worshipped God after the great deliverance from king Pharaoh when God made a path on the Red Sea. They passed through the Red Sea on dry land and their enemies who attempted to do same were destroyed. They worshipped God by recounting what God has done (Exodus 15:1-12). The Israelites worshiped God by sharing their testimony. Whenever you share your testimony, you are hallowing God’s name (Exodus 15:4-12). They worshipped God by praising Him for what He will do in the future (Exodus 15:13-17). So, when you praise God in advance for what He’s yet to do, you are hallowing God’s name. To crown it all, they worshiped God with musical instruments (Exodus 15:20-21). When you praise God with musical instruments, you are hallowing God’s name.

  • We should hallow God’s name after He has revealed His plans and purposes to us

Gideon worshiped God after God confirmed His plan to deliver the Israelites from the Midianites through him. God already told Gideon and gave him a sign that He will use him to deliver the Israelites from the Midianites. Gideon wanted to take 32,000 along with him to the war but God said no. God instructed Gideon to reduce the people until they got to just 300. That is like ratio 1:106 which is less than 1% compared with the 32,000 he planned to go to war with earlier.

Definitely, Gideon must have been skeptical and afraid thinking of how he would deliver the Israelites with just 300. So, God made an arrangement and gave someone a dream of how Gideon will defeat the Midianites. God allowed Gideon to overhear the dreamer while he was narrating the dream to a friend and and the friend gave the interpretation. God used that avenue to reconfirm to Gideon that He will give him the victory over the Midianites. After  Gideon heard this, he worshiped God. (Judges 7:13-15). Hallowing God’s name gives Him a great delight.

Prayer Points: Hallowing God’s Name

  1. Father, I praise you, Lord of heaven and earth for revelation into your Word.

Luke 10:21

At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

2. Father, I thank you for always rolling away the stone hindering me from possessing my possessions. Lord, I thank you for always answering my prayers

John 11:41-42

3. Father, I thank you for revealing your purpose to me. Lord, I bless and glorify your name for giving me the grace to fulfill my purpose

John 12:27-28

“Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

4. Father, I thank you for the provision of my daily bread. Lord, I thank you for constantly feeding me with your Word which is the Bread of Life

Matthew 26:26

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

5. Father, I thank you for constantly supplying my needs. Lord, I thank you for constantly multiplying the little I have. Father, I thank you because you have never put me to shame

Matthew 15:36

Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people.

6. Father, I thank you for constantly revealing your plans and purpose to me. Lord, I bless you for you have never left me in the dark.

Judges 7:13-15

Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”

14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”

15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”

7. Father, I thank you for always answering my prayers. Lord, I thank you because by your grace, you have removed my shame and disgrace. Father, I thank you for turning my mourning into dancing

Exodus 15:3-5

3 The Lord is a warrior;  The Lord is his name. 4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his army  he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh’s officers are drowned in the Red Sea. 5 The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone.

10. Father, I thank you because your right hand is majestic in power. Lord, I thank you for shattering the enemies. Father, I bless you for throwing down those who oppose you in the greatness of your majesty.

And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.

10 Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

In your unfailing love you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them to your holy dwelling. 14 The nations will hear and tremble;  anguish will grip the people of Philistia.15 The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away; 16 terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone— until your people pass by, Lord, until the people you bought pass by. 17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance— the place, Lord, you made for your dwelling, the sanctuary, Lord, your hands established.
