Building an Altar of Worship

Special Thanksgiving Service: Building an Altar of Worship

As we thank God today, we will be considering the topic, “Building an altar of worship.”

Bible Text: Genesis 12:7

The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.

How many altars did Abraham build & why did he build those altars?

Abraham built five altars at different times. We will consider the times and the reasons why he built those altars:

The altars built by Abraham

  1. The altar by the oak tree at Moreh near Shechem
  2. The Altar at Bethel
  3. The Altar at Bethel again, after back from Egypt
  4. The altar by the oaks of Mamre close to Hebron
  5. The Altar to sacrifice Isaac

The Midnight Hour: Night of Divine Encounter

The Midnight Hour Experience

The man at the pool of Bethesda had a midnight hour experience. He was bedridden for thirty-eight years. At the pool, we had so many sick people there. The scripture says there were a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the move of the water. Whenever the water was been stirred by the angel, whosoever entered the pool first will get his or her healing. This particular man’s case has endured for more than a night. Definitely, he must have wept for thirty-eight years. He was helpless for thirty-eight years because there was no one to take him into the pool of water. He looked like someone who had retired to fate believing that his situation had no solution

When Jesus met him He asked him if he would like to receive his healing, but he could not answer in the affirmative. He was just explaining to Jesus the reason why he could not be healed. Many of us at our midnight hour, Jesus is willing to heal us yet we explain our miracle away. Many when they need healing run to Jesus in the bible. In the case of this man, he did not run to Jesus. Instead, Jesus came to meet him where he was.

Cry Unto God at The Midnight Hour

When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was passing by, he cried unto Jesus for help and Jesus healed him from his blindness. Jesus had to question him and asked him what he wanted from him. He had to tell Jesus that he wanted to receive his sight before Jesus healed him. In the case of this man, he saw Jesus but he did not even pray to God. He did not make any request from Jesus. Yet, Jesus asked him if he wanted to receive his healing but his answer was not encouraging. Jesus overlooked his response which was not too palatable and He went ahead to heal him all the same. He told him to rise up, take up his bed and walk. Immediately, he received his healing

There are many people who will love to see you down permanently. They are the enemy of progress. Your promotion normally annoys such people. The Jews who saw him questioned him about he received his healing on the Sabbath. He answered them, “He who made me well said to me, ‘Take up your bed and walk.’ (John 15:10-11). Jesus later told the man not to sin no more. This shows us that one of the reasons why the weeping of some might endure more than a night is sin.

Genesis 11:1-9

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward,[a] they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. 6 The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.” 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Insulting The Holy Spirit – Sins Against The Holy Spirit Part 7

Insulting The Holy Spirit

Today, we are going to be considering “Insulting the Holy Spirit” as we continue with the Holy Spirit series

What does it mean to insult someone?

  • To insult means to speak to or treat with disrespect or scornful abuse.
  • It means a disrespectful or scornfully abusive remark or action

What does it mean to insult the Holy Spirit?

It means to treat the Holy Spirit with insolence, indignity, or contempt

Hebrews 10:29 says:

How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?

The Lord’s Prayer Part 5: The Will of God

The Will of God

The will of God is very important. When Jesus was teaching the disciples how to pray, He said they should pray tat God’s will should be done on earth as it is in heaven.

God’s will in the creation of man

God’s ultimate plan for us is to do His will on earth. When He created Adam, He gave him some specific instructions about His will concerning how to manage the garden of Eden. God told Adam that he may eat all the fruits in the garden but he should refrain from eating out of the fruit of knowledge of good and evil. However, man derailed from God’s will and sinned against God. God’s plan for us is for us to be fruitful and multiply and to replenish the earth. God’s plan for us is to have dominion on earth. When man sinned, we lost this special privilege to Satan. However, our dominion has been restored through Jesus Christ

God’s will was reaffirmed in the Lord’s prayer

When Jesus was teaching His disciples how to pray, one of the prayer point is that God’s will will be done on earth as it is in heaven

Resisting The Holy Spirit: Sins Against The Holy Spirit Part 6

Resisting The Holy Spirit

Today, we are going to be considering, “Resisting The Holy Spirit”

What does “to resist mean”?

To resist means to withstand the action or effect of. It means to set oneself against someone or something. It also means to combat or oppose.

  • Our bible text shows that there has been some antecedents by the Jews. They always resist the Holy Spirit. It is not a one off habit but that has been their habitual practice. Stephen was the one speaking here to lay emphasis on how the Israelites constantly resist the Holy Spirit. He described them as stiff-necked people and uncircumcised in heart

How can you resist the Holy Spirit?

You resist the Holy Spirit if your heart is uncircumcised

God made references to this several times in the scripture by telling the Israelites to circumcise their hearts:

Deuteronomy 30:6

“And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.

Deuteronomy 10:15-16

Yet on your fathers did the Lord set His affection to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as it is this day. So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer.

Thy Kingdom Come: The Lord’s Prayer Part 4

The Lord’s Prayer Part 4 – Thy Kingdom Come

Today, we will consider the topic, ‘Thy Kingdom Come.” We pray that as we listen to this message, God illuminate our hearts to spread the message about the kingdom of God in all the nations of the world in Jesus’ name.

Bible Passage: Matthew 6:9-13

“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

What is a kingdom?

A kingdom is a country, state, or territory ruled by a king or queen.

What is God’s kingdom?

  • Kingdom of God, also described as the kingdom of Heaven, is the spiritual realm over which God reigns as King, or the fulfillment of God’s will on earth.
  • God’s plan is for the earth to be an extension of God’s kingdom. He created man in His image to be His ambassador on earth. God put us in charge of earth so that we can rule and govern the earth the same way He would have governed it. He will visit the earth to check and to see if man is still dominating  the earth and ruling it according to the masterplan
  • God made heaven His throne and He made the earth His footstool
  • Satan introduced sin into the world and he cunningly took over the earth from man. However, the plan of God is to recover the earth back through the believers.

Quenching The Holy Spirit

Sin Against The Holy Spirit Part 5: Quenching The Holy Spirit

Today, we are going to consider the topic, ‘Quenching The Holy Spirit.”

What does it mean to quench the Holy Spirit?

  • To quench the Holy Spirit means to put out the fire of the Holy Spirit or to turn away God’s Spirit
  • Quenching the Holy Spirit also means to subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of the Holy Spirit.
  • To quench the Holy Spirit means to stifle or to extinguish the Spirit of God

Introduction – Don’t quench or extinguish the Holy Spirit

From the account of Paul in 1 Thessalonians 5, we realized that God has granted to Christians the ability either to restrict or release what the Spirit does in our lives.

The Holy Spirit comes like a fire:

The Spirit comes to us as a fire. You can fan the fire of the Holy Spirit into full flame and give Him the freedom to accomplish His will. You can also douse and extinguish the Holy Spirit by the water of human fear, control, and flawed theology.

The Spirit obviously desires to work in your life and in our church. To use Paul’s metaphor or analogy, the Spirit is like a fire whose flame we want to be careful not to quench or extinguish.

Acts 2:3

They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.
