Thank God For His Mercies
Thank God For His Mercies
Today, we will be thanking God for His mercies. What is mercy? Mercy is compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm. One of the ways to receive God’s mercy is to be merciful. We need to thank God for showing us mercy as we have also decided to be merciful to others.
God is gracious and compassionate and we need to thank Him for His mercies. By God’s mercies we have received the forgiveness of our sins. Through the mercies of God, we are not judged as we deserve. When David sinned against God by taking census when he was not supposed to do so, God decided to punish Him. God gave him three options: Three years of famine, or three months of devastation by the sword of his enemies, or three days of a pestilence on the land. David chose the third option and seventy thousand people died as an angel of death passed through the land.
David chose the third option because he believed that it is better to fall into the hands of God because He is great in mercy. Truly, when he cried unto God, the plague stopped. God is slow to anger and He is rich in mercy. He is slow to chide and swift to bless. His love endures forever. By His mercy He sent Jesus Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Jesus is Rich in Mercy
Jesus is rich in mercy. He showed mercy to many during His earthly ministry. The woman caught in adultery was a product of His mercy. She would have been stoned to death if Jesus did not intervene. He healed several people by His mercies. Even on Sabbath days, he healed several people by His mercies despite the fact that the Pharisees and Saducees were against it.
During the crucifixion of Jesus He demonstrated His merciful nature. He was rejected, persecuted, abandoned and condemned by the people He came to save and die for. They maltreated Him and dehumanized Him yet He prayed for them at the point of death by saying that God should forgive them. How can we ever quantify God’s mercy? It is unquantifiable. He gives rain to both the righteous and the wicked. He gives sinners a lifetime opportunity to repent. Today, as we pray, we will thank God for His mercies and express our gratitude to Him.
